Im sure everyone has heard the regular version of this song but I thought that the recent reissue and the Malkmus Solo bootleg were nice variations of this classic indie tune.

Live from the soundtrack to "Stop Making Sense." Instead of the funky drums and full band, David Byrne walks out on stage with a boombox playing pre-recorded percussions and his acoustic guitar. A nice change from the regular version.

The phish cover of the song is another nice variation of the regular song. The concert opener was segued straight into this with a nice funky intro to the song. From a great Fall 97' concert (12/07/1997)

As much as i like his layed back style on tracks like "40 0z for breakfast" (which was featured earleir on cocaineblunts) nothing beats him spitting out words at rapid fire speed in alphabetic order. Listen for yourself, its the jumpoff.

Mike Skinner aka The Streets is pretty much the first British rapper to breakthrough into the American Hip-Hop scene. His style is unique and he sometimes speaks his lyrics rather than rapping them. The beats aren't spectacular but they set the right mood for his songs. This particular song is pretty much the single off his album "Original Pirate Material"

Frank Zappa - Peaches en Regalia

From Zappa's first solo album "Hot Rats", most songs are instrumental and filled with long jams between Zappa, Jean-Luc Ponty and Ian Underwood. This is the opening track on the album, and not only is it a great piece of music, but it is also covered by one of my favorite bands- Phish.

I first found about Buena Vista Social Club when PBS aired a documentary on them a couple years ago. Their self titled cd is a collaboration of some of the best musicians in cuba. Even if you don't know a word of spanish, the musicianship is great and the lyrics just add to the beauty of the song.

The Beta Band - Dry The Rain

There's a scene in High Fidelity where elitist record store owner Cusack proposes that he can get everyone in his store to buy this album by just putting on" Dry The Rain." A minute into the song, everyone in the store is bobbing their head and asking what they're playing.

This song is from their 99' EP "Spit on a Stranger." One of my favorite recordings of one of my favorite bands. The build up to the opening chords, the odd lyrics: this is pavement at their finest.

The E.P also has four other great songs (Spit on a Stranger, Roll With the Wind, Porpoise and the Hand Grenade, and Rooftop Gambler)

Although I plan on only posting one artist per an entry, I figure I'll do a double-header in celebration of my first post. I chose these artists because I'm seeing them both on Halloween at the Hammerstein Ballroom.

Brooklyn-based Antibalas are a thirteen-member band equipped with "horns, bass, polyrhythmic beats, funky breaks, and furious lyrics in English, Yoruba and Spanish." Many of their politically-charged songs incorporate jazz, funk and African rhythms to make a sound unlike anything you've ever heard before.

Medeski, Martin, and Wood are another NYC-based group. They're a jazz trio consisting of drums, keys, and bass. After seeing them last may I realized that the best way to experience this band is live. They really connect to each other musically and are able to easily sink into a deep funk groove. Another great thing is that the drummer has a whole side table of odd instruments such as pots and pans and all sorts of international percussions. This particular song is the only one on the album with lyrics; It's a spoken word by Col. Bruce Hampton.
